October 11 – Humility

Humility Numbers 12:3:  Now Moses was a very humble man, more humble than anyone else on the face of the Earth.

Moses grew up in a palace, but gave it all up and went to the desert, learned to depend on God and through this, God added richer virtues to his life.  In today’s prosperity driven world, everyone wants to live in the king’s palace and be a king too.  But Moses left it all for a deeper and higher cause.

This is why he is called one of the most humble men on Earth.  It must have been hard to let go of such position, power, glory, honor that he received being one of pharaoh’s sons and brother to the prince.  Moses died to all that earthly glory and gave himself to God.

At the same time, Moses lost a lot of confidence in himself in the desert.  God and Moses have a conversation where God consistently tries to help Moses see that what is going to take place isn’t about Moses but about God.  God says to Moses that he was going to be with him to accomplish this great task – Exodus 3:12. Then God gives Moses his name which means that Moses will have access to God’s power and he can use God’s name to help the Hebrew people work with Moses.  Then God gives Moses the complete plan for liberating the Israelites and God says he will be the one to persuade both the Israelites and the Egyptians to work with Moses.  In Exodus 3:18 and Exodus 3:21. God said He was going to take care of everything because this wasn’t about Moses it was about God and God’s people.

Here, Moses got faint hearted and needed to see God again and not himself.  If we are so consumed in our weaknesses, we will never see God. Humble does not mean low self-confidence. It means having confidence in God and not dependent on our natural abilities, may there be great or low.

Like Moses, we are all called to step out to do great things, but we aren’t going to do anything of lasting value or worth if we are full of pride and arrogance.  Overcoming ego needs humility and faith in the love, grace and power of God.  Overcoming ego requires us to stop thinking about ourselves in puffy pride and boasting. Boasting is ugly, and arrogant.   Let us get over ourselves and start looking to be humble.  Trust God as a child!
