January 31 – Be on the Right Side of the Fire – A Devotion

Exodus 3 Now Moses was tending the flock of Jethro his father-in-law, the priest of Midian, and he led the flock to the far side of the wilderness and came to Horeb, the mountain of God. 2 There the angel of the Lord appeared to him in flames of fire from within a bush. Moses saw that though the bush was on fire it did not burn up. 3 So Moses thought, “I will go over and see this strange sight—why the bush does not burn up.”

When Moses saw the fire on the bush, it was stunning to him that it did not burn up the bush.  We see that same marvel with Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego in chapter 3 of the Book of Daniel, three Hebrew men thrown into a fiery furnace by Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, when they refuse to bow down to the king’s image.  The three were not consumed by the flames of fire, but the king sees four men walking in the flames, the fourth was Christ. When we are on the right side of God, the fire is our protection, our blessing and joy.  This fire purifies us, sets us apart, and gives us spiritual power and anointing.  In Acts, we see how the Holy Spirit fire transformed ordinary men to powerful mighty witnesses to Christ (Acts 1:8).

Jesus had told the disciples that they should wait for Him in Jerusalem for some time to be endowed with power from on high to be His witnesses to the ends of the Earth. Similarly, Moses was to represent God in the land of Egypt and his anointing was activated in his fire experience of God.  It all starts with the fire.

  1. Today, we need that fire to anoint us with the power of God.

  2. To keep our flame and passion for Christ burning, or we will go cold and lukewarm and familiar.

  3. We need the fire to protect us from the enemy. When we pray especially against the works of the devil against us, we burn them down with the fire of Heaven.

  4. The strange fire, which was not from God is judged. When the two sons of Aaron offered strange unauthorized fire, Holy fire came before the presence of God and killed them (Luke 10:1-2).

When we are in the will of God, His fire anoints and protects us, but if out of His will, His fire destroys and judges us and strange fire, not from God is consumed by God and destroyed as well.  We need to be aware of the different fires and chose God’s fire.
