Building A Prayer Life – February
February 2 – Groans and Silent Words
Romans 8:26: Likewise, the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.
Sometimes, we are in so much agony that we cannot pray, but we groan without audible words. At other times, words fail us due to extreme pain, emotion, frozen sorrow and horror. This is when the compassion of the Holy Spirit takes over. For a believer, the Holy Spirit is our Comforter, and during those times, He encompasses us with peace and healing. It is such a privilege to receive this marvelous intercession especially in times of great testing. There are many testimonies of families who have tragically lost their loved ones through death and they suddenly experienced a beautiful peace and comfort surrounding them. The Holy Spirit sees their pain and sorrow and pours in comfort for them. He does this because:
The Holy Spirit prays for us with God’s will in mind. It is the Father’s will that we are comforted in trials. “And He who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God.” -Romans 8:27.
The Holy Spirit prays for us when we are very weak. “In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness.” – Romans 8:26. Sometimes, we fear that if we did not pray, God would allow the most terrible things to happen to us, but God knows when we are weak, mentally at that season or even physically weak, and instead of holding a hammer over our heads for dying prayer, the Holy Spirit in His love and compassion takes over and prays for us.
Many times, when we pray, we are clueless and really don’t know what to pray for. If we submit to the Holy Spirit and ask Him to take over, He prays for us with wisdom we lack. “We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans.” – Romans 8:26. If we have the gift of tongues, we will pray through tongues; otherwise, God Himself will pour prayers into our hearts to pray. Sometimes, we groan, and that cry goes straight to God.
As humans, we struggle to love others, but if we submit and invite the Holy Spirit to take over, He floods our hearts with Love. Now hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us.” – Romans 5:5.
He floods our hearts with mercy, and also pours out mercy when we cannot pray. He intercedes for us in mercy all the time. “Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus,” -Romans 8:1. Thus, we will not be judged during our prayerless weak moments. Satan might condemn us and tell us we are prayerless, useless and rotten, but the Holy Spirit removes those accusations.
This wonderful connection and blessing from the Holy Spirit is possible because we surrender to the Savior and receive His gift of Salvation to become born again in Spirit. Maintain a daily communion with the Holy Spirit and in times of weakness and trials, He will nurture you and carry you through.
