Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi on Friday called the Centre’s decision to repeal all three black farm laws as much delayed but a welcome step. He said that had Prime Minister Narendra Modi taken this decision much earlier, several precious lives would have been saved.

Blaming the Centre for thrusting these black farm laws arbitrarily on the farmers without taking them into confidence, CM Channi said, “The BJP led Central government should admit on record to have made a Himalayan blunder in bringing these bills for which it hardly bothered to even relent for the past one and half years.”

Notably, the farmers’ agitation on the Delhi borders and across the state has so far claimed nearly 700 lives during the unparalleled struggle to safeguard their rights to secure livelihood and the future of their generations.

CM Channi said that incidents like Lakhimpur Kheri which happened during the struggle have put a slur on the fair name of democracy and the people will never forgive BJP led Central government for its misdeeds.

Pointing out further, CM Channi said that now when the Prime Minister has announced to withdraw these draconian farm laws he should compensate the farmers adequately for the humungous losses of life and property suffered by them.

In an unusual move, SAD (Shiromani Akali Dal), once a close ally of the BJP in Punjab, on Friday reverberated the sentiments of ruling Congress in the state, as it welcomed the surprise announcement of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to repeal the three farm laws, calling it “a defining moment in history”.

Five-time Punjab Chief Minister and SAD leader Parkash Singh Badal joined Punjab Congress chief Navjot Singh Sidhu, former Punjab chief minister and Congress leader Capt Amarinder Singh and Congress MP Manish Tewari in giving a big thumbs up to the Prime Minister for his ‘historic’ move. Badal said it marks a historic day for the farmers on the sacred day of Guru Nanak Dev’s Prakash Purb. “This is the greatest event in the history of farmer struggles all over the world. I thank the great Guru Nanak Devj ji Maharaj and congratulate every farmer working hard on his fields,” he said in a statement here. Bemoaning that the farmers were not consulted before enacting these laws, the veteran Akali leader said, “It was the first time in the history of democratic governments that brazen and cruel laws were made without even taking the stakeholders on board. No government should ever do such an insensitive and cruel thing again.”

He said the decision will have implications far beyond the farmers and will have a wide-ranging and long-lasting impact on the struggle for justice for the poor and the deprived across the world. He, however, expressed sadness over the loss of precious lives during the struggle. “My first thoughts go the families of over 700 farmers who kissed martyrdom on the path of this just and noble struggle. I wish that they were here with us to see this day today.”

He said the loss of lives of these brave soldiers and tragic events like Lakhimpur would always remain a dark blot on the face of this government. Mr Badal asked both the Centre and the state governments to stand by the martyrs’ families with liberal help in the form of government jobs and financial assistance.

Former Punjab chief minister Capt Amarinder Singh said it was a piece of great news on the occasion of Guru Nanak Jayanti. In a series of tweets, the Congress veteran said, “Great News! Thankful to PM for accepting the demands of every Punjabi and repealing the 3 black laws on the pious occasion of Guru Nanak Jayanti. I am sure the central government will continue to work in tandem for the development of Kisan.”

Congress leader and MP from Anandpur Sahib Manish Tewari termed it as a victory of farmers struggle. In a tweet, the Congress MP said, “Struggle Triumphs, Arrogance Wilts, Kisan-Majdoor Ekta Zindabad. Long live Punjab, Punjabi and Punjabiat.”

Critics also rose up to say, “So all those economists and experts who lauded the farm laws calling them masterstroke by the govt in their columns will again write more columns calling the repeal of farm laws as another masterstroke?”

History will also remember the stars and celebrities who maintained a diplomatic silence through all the tragedies of the farmers, and those who also fought with the public for defending the farmer and called the farmers Khalistanis, Jihadis, and Pakistanis, yet, the farmers bore their pain and today they are enjoying the harvest and fruit of their struggle. So much needless pain and death could have been averted had the Prime Minister taken this step earlier.
