January 19 – Armed with New Strength – A Devotion

1 Kings 19:9 – “Then he came there to a cave and lodged there; and behold, the word of the LORD came to him, and He said to him, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”

Elijah had come to Horeb and hid there in a cave. God asked him, “What are you doing here Elijah?” Sometimes we run and hide not only from God but from circumstances and people we fear. Perhaps God allowed him to hide for He wanted to teach him new truths. Elijah learned a lot in that season. Elijah also learned to deal with his fears and then emerged out of that cave with new courage.

1. Sometimes, a change of circumstances, or a place, or a holiday can change our perspectives. We may need to do that. 2. In our reflections, we rise with new perspectives. 3. And then, we rise with new courage and wisdom, and emerge from our caves to face the world with new power, armed by the Holy Spirit.

So, remember, if you feel you are running away from something, don’t fear, perhaps you need a cave for a season, just to deal with things in your heart, and then to hear His voice in the cave. When God asked him questions, Elijah got new insight and then he rose with new courage. Remember, our cave hideouts should only be for short seasons, and not too often. Perhaps, Elijah did that once in his lifetime. He did not always run and hide. Always know that after the cave withdrawal, he came back with resounding might and armed in the glory of God. As we know, Jezebel was finally defeated by Elijah, not directly, but really through the judgement of God, through the anointing of Elijah in that situation.
